St. Cloud State University does not currently support 802.11n.

802.11n is an upcoming specification for wireless LAN (WLAN) communications. An addition to the 802.11 family of standards, 802.11n is intended to increase network speed and reliability and to extend the operating distance of wireless networks. Raw data throughput is expected to reach as much as 600 Mbps, or more than 10 times the throughput of 802.11g.

The 802.11n standard has not yet been ratified by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.). SCSU will not support the 802.11n wireless LAN standard until it is ratified. The expected ratification of the standard is set for sometime in 2009. After ratification, SCSU will evaluate the technology and implement a plan for conversion and support.

Note: Some manufacturers are releasing products based on drafts of the pending standard. To prevent support issues, SCSU will not invest in any 802.11n products until the 802.11n standard is fully ratified.
