SCSU Library Proxy

Linking to Full-text Articles from any Web Presence

For faculty whose students link to full-text articles in LR&TS online subscription databases from off campus:

The new proxy service software that provides access to LR&TS online database subscription services from off-campus is easier to use and offers more consistent access. However, off-campus users – including those linking through D2L or course pages -- must modify old links to make the URLs compatible with the new proxy software.

Once the links are modified, they will work for on-campus and off-campus users alike.

To modify a link:

For most links, you need to insert "http://libproxy.stcloudstate.edu/login?URL="  directly in front of the persistent URL for the page to which you want to link.

Given the link address "http://xxx.xxxx.xxx/yyyy," the new link would be "http://libproxy.stcloudstate.edu/login?URL=http://xxx.xxxx.xxx/yyyy ," where "xxx.xxxx.xxx" is the base URL for the full-text page, and "yyyy" is everything that follows the initial single slash "/" after the base URL.

The links shown below are examples of properly modified URLs that allow SCSU faculty, staff or students to access specific full-text articles from common online database subscription services from on or off campus, and assure the vendor of a user's relationship with SCSU.

Example 1: The amended URL for a link to the article "What’s in a slur?" found in Project MUSE would be: http://libproxy.stcloudstate.edu/login?URL=http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/american_speech/v078/78.1henderson.html

Example 2: The amended URL for a link to the article "Multiculturalism takes root" found in EBSCO Academic Search Premier would be: http://libproxy.stcloudstate.edu/login?URL=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=aph&AN=9187923&site=ehost-live

Example 3: The amended URL for a link to the article "Unobtrusive Mobilization by an Institutionalized Rape Crisis Center" found in JSTOR would be: http://libproxy.stcloudstate.edu/login?URL=http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0891-2432%28199906%2913%3A3%3C364%3AUMBAIR%3E2.0.CO%3B2-R
Note: JSTOR uses SICI serial item and contribution identifier to create persistent links. The SICI is available from a link to the Citation/Stable URL at the top of the full text page.

Example 4: The amended URL for a link to the article “Belief in a just world: research progress over the last decade” found in ScienceDirect would be: http://libproxy.stcloudstate.edu/login?URL=http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/S0191-8869(02)00072-7
Note: ScienceDirect uses DOI (digital object identifiers) to create persistent links to articles. The DOI is adjacent to and just above the article title on the full text display.
