Classroom Performance System

About SCSU’s Classroom Performance System

Beginning Fall 2006, SCSU will offer a campus-supported Classroom Performance System (CPS), available in 18 classrooms with a capacity of 75 or more seats.

Instructors use a CPS to obtain data from students in real time. It requires a “base station” computer with one or more receivers connected to it. Each student has a response pad that sends wireless signals to the base station.

SCSU’s CPS, supplied by eInstruction, uses new radio frequency (RF) response pads, which transmit information much like cordless phones and wireless computing devices. RF systems typically have more functions available than infrared systems, the kind that some SCSU instructors previously used. The RF response pads, for example, come with text capabilities and also notify students that their answers have been registered.

At SCSU, students can purchase their response pads through the Husky Bookstore on campus. Enrollment codes can be purchased at the Husky Bookstore or online through eInstruction, our supplier.

Type of Course/Classroom

The Classroom Performance System seems best suited for larger classrooms, primarily because it functions as a time-saver for routine activities such as taking roll and as an interactive tool to elicit student response in a potentially passive learning environment.
