Student FAQ

Q: I can't log in. What's wrong?

A: Logging into D2L Brightspace requires you have a StarID. To get your StarID and set your password, go to StarID Self Service.

It may take up to one business day for you to be able to log in to D2L Brightspace after activating your StarID.

If you have logged in to the D2L Brightspace server OK in the past and this just started happening, ensure that you have your browser settings correct and that you are using a supported Web browser. You can also try contacting HuskyTech at huskytech@stcloudstate.edu or (320) 308-7000 to see if there are any known downtimes or problems.

If you have never been able to log in, please read and ensure you have checked all the items in D2L Brightspace Frequently Asked Questions and then contact D2L Brightspace support at desire2learn@stcloudstate.edu.

Q: I can log in, but I don't see my classes under My Home or I see classes that I am not registered for or have taken in the past. Why is this happening?

A: Existing users may see courses they had from previous semesters (these will be removed at a later date — just ignore them). Additionally, if you added a course and then dropped it, that dropped course may still appear in your course list in D2L Brightspace for a few business days. Scripts are currently run once a day in the early morning hours to add and remove students from courses.

Students will be automatically added into D2L Brightspace courses several days before the scheduled start of courses for each term. If you just registered for a course or just activated your StarID, you should be added into the right courses the next time we run our scripts (once per business day) to add new students into courses.

If it has been more than a day, please contact D2L Brightspace support by e-mailing desire2learn@stcloudstate.edu

Make sure to include your full name, your StarID, what course you’re trying to access and a brief description of your problem. You can also check with your course instructor.

NOTE: Please be aware that you need to be registered for each individual course in order to have access to that course in D2L Brightspace. If you are not enrolled in a course, you would not have access to that course in D2L Brightspace. Not every instructor uses D2L Brightspace and may not have materials available via D2L Brightspace. If in doubt, check with your instructor.

Q: How should my Web browser be configured?

A: Click here to do a system check.

Q: I use AOL to connect to the Internet - how should I connect to D2L Brightspace?

A: For best results with AOL:

  • Connect to the Internet using AOL version 4.0 or higher
  • Open a private chat within AOL (this allows the AOL client to remain open, without asking if you wish to disconnect while minimized)
  • Minimize AOL
  • Launch a recommended browser

NOTE *** AOL 7.0 and higher users may use the AOL provided browser

Q: Do I need any plug-ins to access D2L?

A: Some D2L Brightspace courses use browser plug-ins. To view these portions of the sites, you may need one or more of the plug-ins available on the software downloads page.

Internet Explorer will generally automatically download any plug-ins required by a particular page.

Q: I am having problems connecting with an Internet Service Provider (ISP) outside of SCSU, such as with Charter Cable modems or from an other university or corporate site. What's the deal??

A: Connecting from an ISP or corporate site outside of SCSU should be very similar to connecting from a workstation or computer at SCSU. The differences are in the way the service provider configures their connection to the Internet. Some providers "firewall" or block certain ports or activities. You may need to check with them to find out if there are limitations on certain activities or uses. In the case with other universities or corporate locations (like banks), they may employ different security measures on their computers as well as on their network. D2L Brightspace does require certain settings in your Web browser that allow it to function in an interactive way. If a location has security measures in place on their workstations (for whatever reason), it may impede or prevent D2L Brightspace from working well. You will need to talk with the administrators at that site if this is the case and see if they have restrictive settings.

Q: Whom do I contact if I have a network or software problem?

A: If you believe you have a problem, please e-mail HuskyTech at huskytech@stcloudstate.edu or call (320) 308-7000. HuskyTech should be able to help you with software and minor technical issues. If HuskyTech cannot answer your question(s) please e-mail D2L Brightspace support at desire2learn@stcloudstate.edu

Make sure to include your full name, your StarID, what course you’re trying to access and a brief description of your problem. You can also check with your course instructor.

Q: How do I get a course created in D2L Brightspace?

A: We encourage you to request your D2L Brightspace courses at least a couple of weeks before the beginning of the semester to help ensure they are available to you and your students by the first day of class. It may take up to three business days to process requests during the peak time just before semester start.

To get started, go to http://huskynet.stcloudstate.edu/instructional/d2l and click on the Faculty Course Request link on the right side, below the log-in fields. The system will ask for your StarID and password. Once logged in, select your ID from the list and select the semester that you are requesting. A list of the selected terms' courses will then be generated as they appear in the online class schedule. Be sure to complete all three steps to submit your request. This does have to be done each semester for all classes requiring a D2L Brightspace course shell.

Some tips to help with this process:

  1. If you do not see a course you expect to see on your Faculty Course Request screen, please double check that you are the official instructor of record for that course. (You can view this information in the online course schedule at https://www5.stcloudstate.edu/registrar/CourseSchedule/Search.aspx.) You will need to contact your department or the Office of Records and Registration to have this information changed if it is incorrect. You will normally not be able to request a D2L Brightspace course unless you are the instructor of record. If you use a student StarID, you will not be able to log in to the course request system and you need to email d2l@stcloudstate.edu to have a faculty support person make the request for you.
  2. Please carefully select separate or combined courses as you make your request. (Combined is usually used for multiple sections of the same course or for connected courses with different course ID numbers that all share the same D2L Brightspace course.) Making a change after the fact could take several days.
  3. To complete the Faculty Course Request form, be sure to scroll all the way to bottom of your web browser and click the submit button in Step 3.
  4. Once you’ve requested your course(s), please allow three business days (Monday-Friday) for the course(s) to be created. You will not receive an e-mail confirmation message.
  5. Please note that students may not be added to the D2L Brightspace Classlists until approximately one week before semester start, although some autopopulation could begin before then.

Q: How do I move content from an old D2L Brightspace course to a new D2L Brightspace course shell?

A: Login to D2L Brightspace and click the course name of the new course. Click on Edit Course on the top navigation bar, then Components.

The Copy Course Components section allows you to copy components from any existing course that you are enrolled in as a Teacher.

  1. Select the course you wish to copy from in the dropdown under "Copy the selected course components from:".
  2. Click the checkbox next to the components you would like to copy to the new course. (The details link next to each component will show what that course currently has.)
  3. Click Copy.

The components that were checked should now appear in the new course.

Q: How do I change the starting date of my course?

A: Log in to D2L Brightspace and click the course name that you want to edit. Click on Edit Course on the top navigation bar, then Info (shown by default). Check the box next to the Start Date and change the date using the drop down menus. The End Date of the course may also be changed. Click Save Changes when finished.

Additional Information: By default, the start date is set to several days before the start of the semester. By changing the start and end dates of the course, you are giving your students earlier or later access to the course. Also, the end date entered is the date that the course will be deactivated. For example, if the end date entered is 9/1/04, students will have access until 11:59 pm on 8/31/04.

PLEASE NOTE: Do not change the Course Offering Name or Course Offering Code. The default names are needed in order to ensure population of your course.

Q: Who do I contact l if I have a network or software problem?

A: If you believe you have a problem, please contact HuskyTech at huskytech@stcloudstate.edu or (320) 308-7000. HuskyTech should be able to help you with software and minor technical issues. If HuskyTech cannot answer your question(s) please e-mail D2L Brightspace support at desire2learn@stcloudstate.edu.

Make sure to include your full name, your StarID, what course your trying to access and a brief description of your problem.

Q: How do faculty link to online LRS subscription databases from off campus in Personal, D2L Brightspace or Course Web Pages?

A: You can find information about library resources by linking to http://huskynet.stcloudstate.edu/connected/proxy.asp.
