Student FAQ

Q: I can't log in. What's wrong?

A: Logging into Desire2Learn (D2L) requires you have a HuskyNetID. To get your HuskyNetID and set your password, go to huskynet.stcloudstate.edu. Click on the image "Activate my HuskyNetID".

It may take up to one business day for you to be able to log in to D2L after activating your HuskyNetID.

If you have logged in to the D2L server OK in the past and this just started happening, ensure that you have your browser settings correct and that you are using a supported Web browser. You can also try contacting the HelpDesk at helpdesk@stcloudstate.edu or (320) 308-2077 to see if there are any known downtimes or problems. Also you may try resetting your password (https://www5.stcloudstate.edu/its/password/reset.asp) and attempting to access again to see if that solves your problem.

If you have never been able to log in, please read and ensure you have checked all the items in D2L Frequently Asked Questions and then contact D2L support at desire2learn@stcloudstate.edu.

Q: I can log in, but I don't see my classes under My Home or I see classes that I am not registered for or have taken in the past. Why is this happening?

A: Existing users may see courses they had from previous semesters (these will be removed at a later date — just ignore them). Additionally, if you added a course and then dropped it, that dropped course may still appear in your course list in D2L for a few business days. Scripts are currently run once a day in the early morning hours to add and remove students from courses.

Students will be automatically added into D2L courses several days before the scheduled start of courses for each term. If you just registered for a course or just activated your HuskyNetID, you should be added into the right courses the next time we run our scripts (once per business day) to add new students into courses.

If it has been more than a day, please contact D2L support by e-mailing desire2learn@stcloudstate.edu

Make sure to include your full name, your HuskyNetID, what course you’re trying to access and a brief description of your problem. You can also check with your course instructor.

NOTE: Please be aware that you need to be registered for each individual course in order to have access to that course in D2L. If you are not enrolled in a course, you would not have access to that course in D2L. Not every instructor uses D2L and may not have materials available via D2L. If in doubt, check with your instructor.

Q: How should my Web browser be configured?

A: Click here to do a system check.

Q: I use AOL to connect to the Internet - how should I connect to D2L?

A: For best results with AOL:

  • Connect to the Internet using AOL version 4.0 or higher
  • Open a private chat within AOL (this allows the AOL client to remain open, without asking if you wish to disconnect while minimized)
  • Minimize AOL
  • Launch a recommended browser

NOTE *** AOL 7.0 and higher users may use the AOL provided browser

Q: Do I need any plug-ins to access D2L?

A: Some D2L courses use browser plug-ins. To view these portions of the sites, you may need one or more of the plug-ins available on the software downloads page.

Internet Explorer will generally automatically download any plug-ins required by a particular page.

Q: I am having problems connecting with an Internet Service Provider (ISP) outside of SCSU, such as with Charter Cable modems or from an other university or corporate site. What's the deal??

A: Connecting from an ISP or corporate site outside of SCSU should be very similar to connecting from a workstation or computer at SCSU. The differences are in the way the service provider configures their connection to the Internet. Some providers "firewall" or block certain ports or activities. You may need to check with them to find out if there are limitations on certain activities or uses. In the case with other universities or corporate locations (like banks), they may employ different security measures on their computers as well as on their network. D2L does require certain settings in your Web browser that allow it to function in an interactive way. If a location has security measures in place on their workstations (for whatever reason), it may impede or prevent D2L from working well. You will need to talk with the administrators at that site if this is the case and see if they have restrictive settings.

Q: Whom do I contact if I have a network or software problem?

A: If you believe you have a problem, please e-mail the HelpDesk at helpdesk@stcloudstate.edu or call (320) 308-2077. The HelpDesk should be able to help you with software and minor technical issues. If the HelpDesk cannot answer your question(s) please e-mail D2L support at desire2learn@stcloudstate.edu

Make sure to include your full name, your HuskyNetID, what course you’re trying to access and a brief description of your problem. You can also check with your course instructor.

Faculty FAQ

Q: I can't log in. What's wrong?

A: Logging into D2L requires you have a HuskyNetID. If you don’t have a HuskyNetID contact the HelpDesk (320) 308-2077. If you have forgotten your password please see the password maintenance page.

If you have logged in to the D2L server without problems in the past and this just started happening, ensure that you have your browser settings correct and that you are using a supported Web browser. You may also try contacting the HelpDesk at helpdesk@stcloudstate.edu or (320) 308-2077 to see if there are any known downtimes or problems. You can also try resetting your password by linking to https://www5.stcloudstate.edu/its/password/reset.asp and attempting to access again to see if that solves your problem.

Password Expiration:

If you are an SCSU faculty member who only uses your HuskyNetID for D2L access, please be aware that faculty and staff are required to change their password every 180 days. Notifications of an upcoming password change are sent to your HuskyNet e-mail seven to fourteen days prior to your password expiring. Once your password has expired, you will need to reset it to regain access, you can do this at: https://www5.stcloudstate.edu/its/password/reset.asp. If you are a faculty member, we suggest that you check your HuskyNet e-mail to receive notifications about password changes and to be informed about potential downtimes and other happenings related to D2L.

If you have never successfully logged in to D2L, please read and ensure you have checked all the items in D2L Frequently Asked Questions and then contact D2L support at desire2learn@stcloudstate.edu.

Q: I am having problems connecting with an Internet Service Provider (ISP) outside of SCSU, such as with Charter Cable modems or from an other university or corporate site. Why?

A: Connecting from an ISP or corporate site outside of SCSU should be very similar to connecting from a workstation or computer at SCSU. The differences are in the way the service provider configures its connection to the Internet. Some providers "firewall" or block certain ports or activities. Q: How do I move content from an old D2L course to a new D2L course shell?

A: Login to D2L and click the course name of the new course. Click on Edit Course on the top navigation bar, then Components.

The Copy Course Components section allows you to copy components from any existing course that you are enrolled in as a Teacher.

  1. Select the course you wish to copy from in the dropdown under "Copy the selected course components from:".
  2. Click the checkbox next to the components you would like to copy to the new course. (The details link next to each component will show what that course currently has.)
  3. Click Copy.

The components that were checked should now appear in the new course.

Q: How do I change the starting date of my course?

A: Log in to D2L and click the course name that you want to edit. Click on Edit Course on the top navigation bar, then Info (shown by default). Check the box next to the Start Date and change the date using the drop down menus. The End Date of the course may also be changed. Click Save Changes when finished.

Additional Information: By default, the start date is set to several days before the start of the semester. By changing the start and end dates of the course, you are giving your students earlier or later access to the course. Also, the end date entered is the date that the course will be deactivated. For example, if the end date entered is 9/1/04, students will have access until 11:59 pm on 8/31/04.

PLEASE NOTE: Do not change the Course Offering Name or Course Offering Code. The default names are needed in order to ensure population of your course.
