Women, Media, and Culture

Americans consume media an inordinate amount of time each day, but studies reveal that both women and men downplay the power and influence it has over our lives. The complex, wealthy and powerful U.S. media continue to cause complications for women in terms of realistic, healthy and multi-faceted representations of real women in all forms of media. Our presenter will talk about representations of women in the media and the importance of women being in leadership positions.

Is there a Safety Net? Women, Welfare and Poverty

Women of color, identified as "minority women" in the 1977 National Plan of Action, gave voice to the racism of the women’s movement and the visible double discrimination experienced by women of color based on issues of race and gender. The plan outlines the numerous areas of impact on the lives of women of color, namely employment, education, reproductive rights, immigration, and health among others. Our panelists will offer perspectives and information about the realities, progress and unmet agendas for women of color in the U.S.
