HuskyNet E-mail at SCSUContactsHelpDesk
Accessing HuskyNet E-mail with IMAP or POP3HuskyNet E-mail provides ability to retrieve and send e-mail through use of a third-party IMAP or POP3 client program such as Eudora, Outlook Express or Netscape. Those wanting to use the full Outlook client from off campus should follow these instructions. Access to your online electronic calendar isn't available through this method. Students should note that IMAP or POP3 are not officially supported services for students. If you choose to check your e-mail using POP3, we will be unable to recover your e-mail files if they are lost. Make sure your e-mail is secureSome POP3 & IMAP clients transmit your passwords and data using 'clear text' and may be viewed by anyone who wants to see it. For information about how to make sure that your e-mail is transmitting securely, please visit our Secure E-mail website. IMAP vs. POP3The method used is primarily a function of what your e-mail client (such as Outlook Express) supports. Older e-mail clients may only support POP3. Most clients today support IMAP, which makes a better choice for most users and especially for those using cable modems or other "always-on" type of Internet connections. In the case of POP3, e-mail is typically downloaded and removed from the e-mail server and wouldn't be available through another method such as Outlook Web Access or at another location, but does have the benefit of allowing you to connect, download your e-mail, disconnect from the Internet, compose and read e-mail and then connect again later to send composed e-mail. Generally, it is suggested that you try to use IMAP if at all possible. Using IMAPSetup for IMAP should be fairly straightforward, but you need to make sure you are using Secure IMAP. In your e-mail client, create a new location. Most e-mail clients provide a wizard to add a new location or mailbox. You will need to supply the incoming and outgoing e-mail server addresses as well as your HuskyNetID(username) and your password.
Once that setup has been completed, go in to your "Settings" or "Properties" and make sure you are using Secure Socket Layers (SSL). Your incoming port number should be 993 and your outgoing port number should be 25 and using "TLS" encryption. For more detailed instructions, please visit our Secure E-mail website. Using POP3SCSU does not recommend the use of POP3. If you choose to use it, please be aware that we cannot recover your e-mail files if they are lost and that your data is being transmitted in 'clear text', which is not secure. Setup for outgoing e-mail To send your authentication credentials and outgoing e-mail to the SMTP server using a secure connection you can connect to the SMTP server using SSL. You can do so by selecting “This server requires a secure connection (SSL)” in the outgoing mail server connection. Depending on your configuration, you may need to trust the certificate for this connection when you open your e-mail client using SSL. |
