Network and Server Virus and Vulnerability Protection

Protecting the Network

The campus network is protected by border firewalls at the access point to the Internet and also access control lists on routers that prevent certain types of traffic from being passed throughout campus. Many viruses and worms spread through e-mail or through searching local and remote networks for computers to infect. Such activity can bog down or even halt network traffic. SCSU takes measures to stop or significantly reduce these types of activity on the campus network. Without these measures, campus would experience frequent and lengthy downtimes.

Protecting Servers

To further protect our servers, SCSU uses antivirus software installed directly on the servers to ensure the system is kept clean and not impacted by a virus, worm or other exploit. In addition, firewalls are also used to protect groups of servers and software-based firewalls are installed on individual servers to prevent unnecessary compromise.

All people maintaining a server on campus are advised to reduce risk by uninstalling or disabling all services that are not being used.

All St Cloud State university-owned servers are covered under the campus license agreement for Symantec AntiVirus. To install Symantec Antivirus on a university-owned, Windows-based server:

  1. Go to the SCSU install point at \\stcloudstate\HuskyNet\apps\_PC Installers\Symantec.
  2. Open the directory with the most current version and run the Symantec Antivirus installer. This setup may require a reboot.
  3. Once Symantec is installed, your server will be kept up-to-date by the central antivirus server on campus.

Note:  You cannot install Symantec Antivirus from this location for personal or non-university-owned computers. Only computers owned by the university should use this method.

If you would like to download Symantec Antivirus for your personally owned computer, please go to the Symantec page.
