Preventing Spam

SCSU has an aggressive anti-spam program, but you can take additional steps to help prevent spam from coming to your SCSU e-mail address.

Don't open suspected spam
Delete spam messages without opening them or viewing them in the preview pane. Some spammers include html code that will let them know you’ve opened the message, which confirms that your address is active and makes it valuable to other spammers. Use SCSU’s Spam Solution service to add the spammer’s address to your blocked list.

Don't make it easy for spammers to get your SCSU e-mail address
Spammers often get e-mail addresses through buying lists of e-mail addresses from other companies. When you sign up for anything that requires you to include an e-mail address, use a free e-mail account at Hotmail, Yahoo or MSN. Then you won’t have to deal with the resulting spam on your HuskyNet e-mail.

Don't unsubscribe or remove
Only unsubscribe or remove yourself from legitimate listservs that you have subscribed to and no longer desire to get mail from. Do not remove or unsubscribe yourself in any other circumstance  because doing so may let spammers know you’re address is active, making it more valuable to other spammers.

Don't click on hyperlinks in messages
Doing so not only takes you to the Web site but also lets the spammer know your e-mail address. Instead, open your Web browser and type in the Web address to that page or search for it using Google or some other search engine so you can browse the sender’s Web site anonymously.

Notify companies if you want ads stopped
If you asked to be e-mailed ad info but now you want it to stop, you will need to notify the company. Legitimate companies are forbidden by law from sending unsolicited e-mail. As a result, they are required to include directions or links to facilitate the removal of your e-mail address from their distribution list. Steps are usually simple and straightforward.

Don’t click on advertising links in e-mails
If you see an ad or a site you would like to explore in an advertising e-mail, don’t click on the links included. Instead, open a Web browser and manually find the company on the Web so you can explore the Web site without any connection to your e-mail address.
